JACKAL
"Cecilia! I'm coming! Hang in there!"

      Speed - Medium
      Endurance - Medium
      Firepower - Single-Shot
      Bomb Rating - Poor

The main character of the game, Jackal is all-around average. His only real specialty is that he gets high marks on a ton of levels... plus he's the only one to get a 3-medal ranking on the final level! This is offset by his special weapon, however. He tosses a grenade that does relatively little damage and doesn't cause too large of an explosion. He does get extra uses of it (15 in Team, 20 in Solo), but it still doesn't make it all that great. On a non-gameplay related note, Jackal's love interest is the captured Cecilia. If Jackal is one of your characters you will get a bonus intermission after Stage 2, as well as an extra scene in the ending.

MILKY
"Now I get it. War isn't as much fun as working out!"

Speed - Fast
Endurance - Weak
Firepower - Single-Shot
Bomb Rating - Excellent

Mmmm... Milky. My favorite character for obvious reasons, but in all honesty she's an excellent character to have in just about any team. Although she is the typical female stereotype (speedy but weak), her speed comes in incredibly handy. While Marie Bee is a "Fast" character too, Milky gets 2+ medals on more stages than Marie, making her faster most of the time. But even though her gunfire is the regular single shots, her bomb is quite possibly the most powerful in the game. After the bomb connects with something, flames erupt in a horizontal row and stay on the screen for a few seconds. As long as the enemy/boss stays in range of the flames, you can deal big damage. The other drawback is the lack of range, as she tosses the bomb less than half a screen... so you must be pretty close when you throw it.

LOKI
"The guys that killed my pals.... Makes me sick!"

      Speed - Medium
      Endurance - Medium
      Firepower - Single-Shot
      Bomb Rating - Good

Loki is another "average" character who's middle of the road when it comes to speed and taking hits, as well as the regular gunpower. On average he receives less medals than Jackal, so the only reason to really use Loki over him would be his bomb. He shoots a tiny rocket that goes full-screen, and upon impact delivers a powerful punch. The downside is the size, as you'll find it's VERY easy to miss your target completely and end up squandering it.

SOUTHERN CROSS
"Dad! I gotta stand up for justice."

Speed - Very Slow
Endurance - Very Tough
Firepower - Double-Shot
Bomb Rating - Decent

A true powerhouse, Southern Cross can dish out the damage as well as take it... and he'll need to take some hits if you aren't very good at rolling, since he is SLOW. I guess that's to be expected of a "big" character, as you only want to use them during boss battles or extremely tough areas. His bomb is pretty interesting - he tosses a boomerang which explodes on impact, causing two rows of explosions awhich split up in 45-degree angles. Unfortunately they don't do much damage, but you're practically guaranteed to hit SOMETHING... remember that this is a boomerang! It will come back in your direction if you don't hit anything in front of you. Luckily, it won't damage you but you can't catch it and use it again... aww....

MARIE BEE
"Battlefield, this is where I belong..."

      Speed - Fast
      Endurance - Weak
      Firepower - Single-Shot
      Bomb Rating - Decent

The "other" fast character. Unfortunately, as mentioned above, the only reason to use Marie over Milky is if she performs better on the route you're planning to play. That's a rarity though, since she receives 1 star on 11 of the 15 regular stages. Her bomb is actually a heat-seeking rocket, which is very nice since you can just sit back and fire without having to worry about aiming. Only problem is, the rockets are pretty weak. Some will prefer this over Milky's short-range yet powerful bomb, so if this sounds like your thing you'll be better off selecting Marie over Milky. Just don't expect many life-ups after levels...

RIO
"... Angry... Never felt like this..."

Speed - Slow
Endurance - Tough
Firepower - Single-Shot
Bomb Rating - Good

Rio is a strange case... he's just one attribute shy of being considered one of the "big" characters. He's still slow, but not AS slow as Southern Cross or Big Mama... plus he can take a good deal of damage, but S.C. and Mama just barely edge him out in that regard too. The major difference is that he only fires the single shots.... so what's the point of using a slow character without the extra firepower? Well, he does get 2+ stars on a lot of the stages, so that speeds him up a bit. And his bomb is pretty powerful when used right - he fires an explosive arrow out of his crossbow, and forms a straight line of explosives. Excellent damage if you're fighting one of the boss tanks, but crappy damage if you're fighting one of the human bosses.

MARU
"I'm smart, I'm okay, I'm still in action!"

      Speed - Slow
      Endurance - Medium
      Firepower - Double-Shot
      Bomb Rating - Very Good

Maru is another odd character... he has the prized double shots, but he's a tad faster than Big Mama or Southern Cross. To make up for this, he takes a lot more damage, about the same as Jackal and Loki! Is the tradeoff really worth it? Perhaps, because his bomb is pretty effective when used right. He throws a gas canister, which releases poison gas in three rows (kinda like the 3-way shot). Only problem is, the canister bounces once and THEN the fumes split up, meaning that it doesn't have much of an opportunity to spread out. Although if you do make contact with something when it hits the ground for the first time, it will release the gas. It can do tons of damage if you can get all three gas clouds to hit one of the bosses (how poison gas can do so much damage to a tank or a jet is beyond me, but who cares, it's a video game!)

BIG MAMA
"Doing alright, children? Mama's working hard for you!"

Speed - Very Slow
Endurance - Very Tough
Firepower - Double-Shot
Bomb Rating - Very Good

She's big, she's a mama... she's Big Mama! Except for the bomb and medal rankings, she's pretty much the same character as Southern Cross. It's usually a good idea to have one or the other in your team for those rough situations when you'll need heavy firepower or some tough defense. Her bomb is a rocket which causes a HUGE explosion, taking up most of the screen! Very few can escape its wrath! Unfortunately, they decided to give her fewer uses of the weapon, I guess because they thought it was too good. You get 8 uses in Team Mode, and 10 in Solo.
